WELCOME TO JIM'S AUTISM BLOG

Hi everyone and thanks for visiting our blog. My wife and I created this blog to chronicle our experience while raising a son with Asperger's syndrome. Since our son was diagnosed with an ASD at age 5, we've had a lot of questions. Lucky for us we have a great support network in place. And our blog gives us an opportunity to share what we've learned with our readers. We hope you find our blog informative and interesting. Thanks again for visiting.

ROLL UP THE RIM TO ASPERGER'S

So it's Monday and Jacob and I both feel a heck of a lot better today.  Sadly, my wife Shannon is still under the weather.  It's also the first day of the March break and I'm not sure what Jacob and I should do today.  I was thinking about taking Jacob downtown today, but the forecast in our area calls for rain, so I'm not sure that a long walk would be appropriate, especially after a lengthy illness.

So I think we'll stick close to home and maybe visit Grandma today.  My mom hasn't seen Jacob in a while which is strange because we only live a few blocks apart from each other.  I love it when Jacob plays upstairs in my old room when we visit Grandma.  It reminds me of when I was young and in school.  Jacob also enjoys going into the basement at my mom's house, which is something I was afraid of when I was his age.  But when I was young, the basement at my mom's wasn't as fun.  Now Grandma has a Sega Genesis hooked up to use and she also has a giant pool table.  Jacob loves playing pool in my mom's basement.  Sometimes he'll use a cue, but he usually just throws the balls around the table by hand.  Jacob enjoys sinking the balls in order and by number.

My mom is always talking about how well behaved Jacob is when we visit her house.  I guess we're lucky because we can let Jacob play alone in the basement for an hour and he never gets into anything he's not supposed to.  Then from there he'll go into the attic and play upstairs for another hour.  I guess that's another character trait that Jacob and I both share.  I too was very good at making fun while alone.  I do have a brother, but he's 15 years older than me so it's like I was an only child growing up, so learning to have fun by yourself was vital while living at home.

We're just glad that Jacob is behaved when we visit Grandma because after all, Grandma is almost 70 and she probably couldn't handle a 7 year old running around and destroying her house.  Although sometimes I wish Jacob would be a little destructive.   Am I cruel for wishing that?   It's like Jacob's Asperger's regulates itself when we visit Grandma's house as he's always on his best behaviour.  If only it would do the same at school.

After a visit with Grandma, we often walk to Tim Horton's for a chocolate chip muffin.  It's only about an extra 10 minute walk so it's not that far away.  I can't believe it that I actually won a free donut on roll up the rim to win yesterday.  I can't ever seem to win anything on those stupid things and honestly, it seems that everyone around me wins, yet I never do.  Most of my friends seem to win free coffees all the time.  But hey, a free donut is a free donut and I'm just happy to win something.

This is my brain.

  1. I used to love rolling the balls around a billiard table when I was little. I could sink them a lot easier than when I used the stick.

    1. I remember when I was about 10. My parents would go to the bar and bring me along. By then I'd been playing for years and I would hustle drunk people for cans of pop. lol
