WELCOME TO JIM'S AUTISM BLOG

Hi everyone and thanks for visiting our blog. My wife and I created this blog to chronicle our experience while raising a son with Asperger's syndrome. Since our son was diagnosed with an ASD at age 5, we've had a lot of questions. Lucky for us we have a great support network in place. And our blog gives us an opportunity to share what we've learned with our readers. We hope you find our blog informative and interesting. Thanks again for visiting.

DO SOLDIERS HAVE ASPERGER'S?

What a March break it's been.  Jacob's been sick for about 10 days and only yesterday did he seem fully over his illness.  Then of course, he got hurt.  He was playing with our dog on the couch and he somehow hurt his right shoulder.  Of course I think it's broken, dislocated or falling off.  Jacob wasn't crying so I knew it wasn't too serious, but I knew that I had to ask if he was okay.  Then out of the blue, Jacob had me in tears.  Here's how the conversation between us went:

Me:  "Are you okay Jacob?"

Jacob:  "No dad, I have a cramp in my soldier.

Jacob:  "I mean in my soldier."

Jacob:  "No wait.  I have a cramp in my shoulder."

Shannon and I both began to laugh which only made Jacob feel worse.  It was so funny to see Jacob mix up the word soldier for shoulder, over and over.  But Jacob doesn't like being laughed at especially when he's upset or hurt.  Jacob spent the rest of yesterday moping around and laying on the couch.  I had no idea a sore shoulder could affect some one's ability to walk.  Then today I was upstairs and I heard a lot of laughing and running going on in the living room.  So I went downstairs to investigate and I saw Jacob chasing after our dog.  Then the conversation went like this:

Me:  "Are you okay Jacob?"

Jacob:  "No dad, I still have a cramp in my, I still have a cramp."

I love his sense of humour and I think Jacob is hilarious.  At the exact moment I asked how he was, he went from having fun to lying on the couch in need of a sling.  I told Jacob that I'd heard him playing for a while and that his shoulder was fine.  At first he got mad, but now he's playing his DS.  I'm glad Jacob is back to normal and I never thought having a son with Asperger's would be so funny.

    1. lol. Jacob takes things very literally too. One time we said "don't let the bed bugs bite." The next thing you know Jacob's Googleing bed bugs.

  2. that IS a tongue twister though? Say sore shoulder 10 times fast. . . soldier's sore shoulder. . . even harder!

Teach him to say rubber baby buggy bumpers. That's the most confounding tongue twister devised since "I slit the sheets" (don't teach him that one).

    1. I asked him to say rubber baby buggy bumpers once, but he got really mad. I had trouble typing the sentence, let alone saying it.

  3. Ha, I love that he just didn't say it the next day. K makes me laugh a lot, too, but she HATES it when I do. I really am just doing it b/c I am a mom and everything she does is uber cute, but she gets all offended. They are funny, though!

    1. Jacob has a hard time understanding when people are laughing with him as opposed to at him. But I hope he'll learn the social aspect as he gets older.
