WELCOME TO JIM'S AUTISM BLOG

Hi everyone and thanks for visiting our blog. My wife and I created this blog to chronicle our experience while raising a son with Asperger's syndrome. Since our son was diagnosed with an ASD at age 5, we've had a lot of questions. Lucky for us we have a great support network in place. And our blog gives us an opportunity to share what we've learned with our readers. We hope you find our blog informative and interesting. Thanks again for visiting.

THE NERVOUSNESS OF ASPERGERS

The stress is mounting at home for us.  Tomorrow, our bathroom renovation is set to begin.  The company is a Home Depot contractor, so we're not worried about getting ripped off, but we are worried about how Jacob is going to react to the disorder and disruption.  You can check out the company here.

The bathroom that's being renovated is the one located on the bedroom level, which of course is the main washroom for the whole house.  We have a full bathroom downstairs, but Jacob has NEVER used it and refuses to.  So, needless to say, we're pretty nervous about whats going to happen when Jacob has a sudden urge to pee.  An urge that apparently hits like a ton of bricks and leaves little time to even make it to the bathroom.

This is also the bathroom that we use to get Jacob ready for school in the morning, so again his entire school day could be thrown out of whack.  Not to mention, if Jacob wakes up in the middle of the night to pee, he's going to find that there's no toilet up stairs and like I mentioned earlier, he'll never make it down into the basement.  I'm so nervous that the next 2 weeks will involve me wiping up the pee trail that extends from Jake's bedroom, downstairs, through the dining room and into the carpeted basement.

Then there's all the nuisance dust that comes when you destroy old plaster walls.  The company will clean every day, but we too will have to dust and vacuum every night.  We're also planning on putting up a drop cloth over Jacob's bedroom door, just to try and lessen the amount of breathable dust that might enter his room.

The entire renovation is expected to take 9 or 10 days, including one day off for inspection.  And of course, next week is March break so Jacob will be home for the majority of the banging, loud noises and the destruction.  We'll just have to keep him as busy as possible and hope for the best.  I'll be sure to post often about how things are progressing with the reno and Jacob.

    1. I hope so too. We've never undergone anything like this in Jacob's life. I hope he is able to regulate his emotions enough to not explode.
