WELCOME TO JIM'S AUTISM BLOG

Hi everyone and thanks for visiting our blog. My wife and I created this blog to chronicle our experience while raising a son with Asperger's syndrome. Since our son was diagnosed with an ASD at age 5, we've had a lot of questions. Lucky for us we have a great support network in place. And our blog gives us an opportunity to share what we've learned with our readers. We hope you find our blog informative and interesting. Thanks again for visiting.

A SPRING/SUMMER HEATWAVE

I can't wait for winter.

Today is officially the first day of Summer, but since it's been over 30° every day for the past 2 weeks, I'd argue that it's been Summer for a while now.  Today the Humidex topped 40° C and that was just at lunch time, so by the time I go back to work at 2:30, it will likely be closer to 50°.  And to top it all off, Jacob had a class bowling trip to go on today.

But the good news is, that Jacob didn't puke because of his motion sickness.  Which for us, is a first.  Usually, anytime Jacob goes on a school bus, we're almost guaranteed a puking fit.  Shannie went on the trip today with Jacob and his classmates, which is nice, because usually I accompany Jacob on school trips.  So we of course, we didn't let Jacob have too much to eat for breakfast and we didn't give him any milk either.  He did drink a lot of water because of the heat, which made us nervous about an upset belly, but we had no choice because it's so hot.

Then we of course, had to pack;

1)  An extra change of clothes.

2)  A puke bowl.

3)  A few plastic bags to carry all the pukey clothes.

And while out on trips with the school, we have to make sure that Jacob doesn't eat anything too heavy or have milk before the bus ride home.  So it was nice that he didn't bring up at all.  I was tempted to let Jacob stay home this afternoon because of the heat, but Jacob wanted to go back so I took him back to school just as the bell rang.

Tomorrow is supposed to be just as hot, but then Friday is supposed to go back to normal temperatures.  In Ontario, a heatwave is described as 3 or more days of 32° C or higher, so we'll be glad when this heatwave is over.  I think tonight Jacob and I are going over to the rec centre to go swimming, depending on my work schedule.  We could all use a really good cooling off anyway.  We have central air here, but it still gets stuffy without any fresh air circulating.  Not that the air is fresh outside, because there is an air quality advisory in effect for our area, which isn't good for Jacob's asthma.

I know many people love the heat, but I for one do not.  And honestly I'm afraid to think about how hot it's going to get in July and August.  and honestly, all this heat only makes me long for winter.

  1. We've been sweltering here too. But I love the heat! I'd glad he didn't get sick---that is awesome! And I'm totally jealous. :)

    1. It's so hard to deal with the motion sickness. Jacob absolutely refuses to take medicine of any kind. One time we tried to slip some in his drink, but he could just sense something was up. Then he began to inspect his drinks for changes in taste and colour. So yeah, we're quite happy.

  2. Yeah, no.... I love the heat if I'm on vacation by the ocean or inside with aircon. We're finally starting to get a few days of sunshine, but I flake out real early as soon as the heat hits.

    We also have a problem with pukey rides... We use a plastic bag instead of a bowl, cause even a plastic bag made as small as possible will still freak him out. He much prefers to vomit over me. I'm so glad he made it!! There's nothing worse than pukey journeys! Oh wait... There is... Pukey journeys in the heat!! (Good save Jacob!)

    1. It's funny because Jacob enjoys puking on us too. He won't even try to aim for a bowl or anything. He'll just face us and puke or puke directly on himself. I hope he's growing out of it.

  3. Hi Jim! Tell me about it! The heat is unbearable where I live. It's been over 105 degrees here every single day. What makes it worse is that the wind is constantly blowing, and it's hot wind. So it feels like I'm living in a convection oven. It's horrible! I've been wanting to move out of here for so long now, and I'm ready! I'm tired of talking...it's time to do. I hate Arizona more and more every summer! Unbearable! I wish it were only 85 degrees....ugh....I know you all have to deal with humidity too, which is also no fun. Hang in there...that's what I'm trying to do. Maybe someday soon, I'll be writing you from Denver. :)

    1. Denver sure sounds nice to me. I think part of it is that I work outdoors too, so I spend way too much time in the sun. And I spend a fortune on sunscreen. But on the bright side, at least I don't live in Arizona. lol
