WELCOME TO JIM'S AUTISM BLOG

Hi everyone and thanks for visiting our blog. My wife and I created this blog to chronicle our experience while raising a son with Asperger's syndrome. Since our son was diagnosed with an ASD at age 5, we've had a lot of questions. Lucky for us we have a great support network in place. And our blog gives us an opportunity to share what we've learned with our readers. We hope you find our blog informative and interesting. Thanks again for visiting.

ASPERGERS AND OUR NEW HOME

Since the start of 2012, we've been actively looking to purchase a new home.  We've wanted something bigger with a private space for Shannie's sister who now lives with us.  There's been a few homes that have come up this year that have fit our criteria for an acceptable home.  But nothing has been good enough for us to jump in and make an offer.

But then on Tuesday, we saw a house that we've loved for years come up for sale.  It's been owned by the same family for over 50 years and they knew my parents when they were young.  So we had a private viewing on Tuesday night and we put an offer in yesterday afternoon.  And after some negotiating, we agreed on a price and now the house is ours.

HOORAY!

There's still some hurdles that need to be cleared, but there is nothing that we can't handle.  It would be best for us to sell the house we're currently living in, but if we have to, we'll just rent this one out until we feel comfortable selling at some point in 2013.  The funny thing is that on October 1st, we actually thought that we'd never find a good home until next year.  But luckily, we did.

And the best part is that we take possession on December 1st of this year.  Because the sellers are long time friends we agreed to let them have until the 15th if they needed it, but we'll still be able to celebrate Christmas in a new home.  Did I mention that the new home is only 2 blocks down the street?  So we will still be a couple blocks from school, work and family.

We haven't told Jacob yet because we want to make sure that things are 100% certain first.  Because even though we've accepted the sale, anything can happen.  The best part is that we won't have to relive what happened on Christmas day 2010 in the same home where the tragedy took place.  So hopefully Jacob is willing to accept this big change.

The home is beautiful with 3 finished levels and 2 bathrooms, which is just what we need.  There's only going to be 4 of us in the home, but when a family member has an ASD, sometimes you need a little extra space to let your mind relax.  So we're very excited and we can't wait until December.  I'll be sure to post some pictures as soon as I can.

  1. Congratulations on your new home purchase! How exciting! I sold the house I had lived in for 18 years last December. The new owners were able to spend Christmas in their new home. I had been moved out of it since just after the Christmas before that. December is an excellent time to move!

    1. Thanks Mac. Our first home purchase was much easier, but the new home is way nicer.

  3. Congratulations! So you’re just counting 6-7 days before you completely claim the house. I’m giving you my “good luck” now. You should prepare yourself for the moving process. I’m glad, though, that the house purchasing was lighter on you. You probably didn’t even need an agent then. But you should still be keen on the details about the house.
