WELCOME TO JIM'S AUTISM BLOG

Hi everyone and thanks for visiting our blog. My wife and I created this blog to chronicle our experience while raising a son with Asperger's syndrome. Since our son was diagnosed with an ASD at age 5, we've had a lot of questions. Lucky for us we have a great support network in place. And our blog gives us an opportunity to share what we've learned with our readers. We hope you find our blog informative and interesting. Thanks again for visiting.

PART 1 OF OUR ABA TRAINING

Sunrise
"Please shed some light."
Recently, we decided to enrolled in a couple ABA programs offered through our autism hub at Chedoke.  And the first program is called "Triple P", or the Positive Parenting Program.  This is the prerequisite for most of the other programs that are available, so we have to complete it.  I'm not saying that we don't want to complete it, it's just that its 10 weeks in length and we do it at home.

The program is based from a book that is broken into 10 chapters, or sessions, which works out to one a week.  The hard part isn't reading the chapter or doing the review, the hard part is that we have a son with an ASD.  Jacob is very independent, but its hard for us to get enough free time to complete the chapter.

Now the first chapter is easy or so I thought.  Chapter one poses the question " What is positive parenting?"  And after going through the chapter we feel that positive parenting is crucial when helping someone like our son.  We have to be consistent together as a team.  And we need as much structure as possible in all aspects of Jacobs life, including discipline.

The thing that I found the most interesting was the point that illustrates the importance of consistent discipline.  And if we ask Jacob to complete a task, we, must ensure that he does it.  If we don't ensure that he does the task, he may learn that he doesn't have to do what we ask.  It sounds and feels a bit harsh, but we both know that Jacob needs structured discipline.

The program seems intense, but do able.  Luckily for us that we have time when Jacob is in school to complete some of the work together.  We may have some difficulty this week because of our court date on Tuesday.  So hopefully once that's done, we'll be able to finish the week on a positive note.

Either way, its exciting to see some direction.  Because all to often, battling autism can be daring and make you feel like your in a downward spiral.  But we know that we must work together to help our son, so we're going to old hands and tackle things on step at a time, together.

  1. That sounds like a very beneficial class. Consistent discipline is important. That's the part that wore me out! I don't know how consistent I was the older my son got and the more worn out I got! I hope you guys do better than I did.

    1. I hope so too. It all seems pretty overwhelming, but we'll do okay. I just finished reading your tequila post. Shannie and I will likely need drinks after each session.
